Fall is my favorite time of the year. I love it not only because of the beautiful leaves that change from green to gold and red and then brown but also because of the motion of the season. Autumn would be a more formal name for it but fall seems to suit so much more because that is exactly what is happening. Leaves fall. Temperatures fall. The sky sometimes seems to fall or feel closer to the earth in clouds and rain. The clocks change back, out of Daylight Savings, and we fall backward in time. The entire season is falling from the heights of summer into great harvest baskets as we prepare for the stillnes of winter.
In the spring in this part of North Carolina we “green up” the mountain and like great blue-green waves rising along the shores that are mountain slopes we see the season rise. Spring is motion, too, but in a different way. And now we see the yellows, oranges, reds and browns wash down the mountains like a colorful shawl around a woman’s shoulders.
A great exhale of the earth as fall settles in.
